Hello I am Karen Reiber and I have created this portfolio to showcase my work and my accomplishments. I will graduate from Kent State University in 2011 with my Masters in Instructional Technology with Media Endorsement and initial licesure. My goal is to work in a Middle School Library as a Media Specialist. I love to work with 7th and 8th graders, they are fun, inquisitive and still enjoy reading. I love to teach research, give book chats and develop teen programs. This site is still under construction.

Goals and Belief Statement
Goal: To obtain/maintain position as a Media Specialist in a middle school.
Since we now live in the Information Age, the Media Specialist is like Google (or any search engine). I believe that we teach, promote and collaborate Information Literacy. The American Library Association defines Information Literacy as having skills to, “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the needed information.” In order to carry out this tall order, we need to be teachers, collaborators, partners and the library administrator. Students view Google as the source that can search out all the answers, as a 21st Century Media Specialist we need to be that search engine to many people.
As a teacher, the Media Specialist instructs both students and staff. I believe that we need to teach utilizing 21st Century skills in order to find answers/information, to know what kinds of resources are needed and how to evaluate and use the resources. We need to teach library skills, technology, life long learning and the love of literature.
As a collaborator, we need to establish a rapport and then a relationship with students, teachers and administrators. Collaboration is a full time job, keeping up with what each staff member is teaching and how you can assist them and their students. Setting up a good system for collaboration is imperative. Serving on a variety of committees will also allow collaboration by the Media Specialist on many levels.
As a partner in education we can reach out to our parent base and to our community. We get to collaborate, teach and reach out to others that can impact our students and staff. As school funding continues to be an issue we can be creative in finding ways to fund programs or equipment. Partnerships are invaluable relationships for schools.
A library administrator wears many hats. I believe that a good administrator: follows district policies, works out a feasible budget, and does all the ordering; supervises library staff, aides and volunteers; sets school library policy, incorporates 21st Century tools, encourages life long learning and shares a love for reading with everyone with whom they come in contact.
Our job is all encompassing. Like Google, we search out what and who we need to get our students, parents and community the resources they need to meet the demands in this Information Age.
I, Karen Reiber, through my experience, education, love for learning and love of reading am ready to assume the position of Media Specialist.
